When one watches the popular teen beach movies of the 1960s, one might think that tanning beds were already widely in use. Actually, these beds were not introduced to the United States until 1978 by Friedrich Wolff, a scientist from Germany.
Wolffs original idea for these beds involved a certain compound of phosphors that would enhance pigmentation in the skin. Although this idea was the primary way in which his tanning beds worked, this patent is no longer in use. Friedrich Wolff eventually sold his tanning company, Wolff Systems, to his brother Jorg.
